Plotting light lines on dark paper is one of those effects that looks incredible and is annoyingly hard to pull off. Most “white” pens are translucent and vanish against black. Living with gel flow under a plotter

Here’s where you earn it. Gel ink relies on a rolling ball to meter ink onto the page, and a plotter’s fast, stop-start motion doesn’t always keep that ball fed. Push the feed rate too high and you’ll see skipping — broken lines, faint starts, dropouts mid-stroke. The fix is mostly speed: slow the plot down noticeably compared to what you’d run a fineliner at, and the flow keeps up.

Priming and shaking

Before a run, prime the pen on scrap until it lays a solid line — gel pens are notorious for a dry, stuttery start. On long plots the ink can starve, so build in a pause to shake the pen and re-prime if you see the line thinning. It’s fiddly, but the pen is cheap enough that keeping two or three primed and swapping them in is a perfectly good strategy.

Tip wear and care

The ball tip holds up reasonably well, but gel ink can crust around the point if a pen sits uncapped between plots — cap it the moment a job finishes. Store the pens tip-down so the ink stays fed toward the ball. Do that and a Gelly Roll will see you through a lot of dark-paper work before the flow gives up.
