The Strathmore 300 Bristol Smooth is the surface to start on because it removes variables: at 270 gsm with a plate-smooth finish, it takes pigment ink crisply, doesn’t feather, and doesn’t pill when the pen retraces a line.

Why smooth, why heavy

Fineliners reward a smooth surface — every bit of tooth softens the line and accelerates tip wear. The 300’s plate finish keeps a 0.2 mm Micron line genuinely 0.2 mm. And the heavy weight matters more than people expect: dense plots dump a lot of ink, and lighter paper cockles into ripples that throw off pen height.

Where it shines
