Ultra-smooth, well-sized, and flat: the papers that give your finest fineliners the cleanest possible lines — for portraits, technical drawings, and framed finished pieces.
For most plots, a decent smooth drawing paper is fine. For fine-detail work — stipple portraits, intricate geometric patterns, hatching at 0.2 mm — paper quality becomes a visible variable in the output. The wrong surface blurs, feathers, or adds texture that competes with the art.
The papers here share three qualities: ultra-smooth surfaces that don’t drag or feather fine tips, good internal sizing that keeps ink exactly where the pen put it, and sufficient weight to stay flat under moderate ink loads.
Hahnemühle Bristol is the benchmark — its plate finish is as smooth as paper gets, and its 250 g/m² weight handles dense hatching without cockling. Three things: surface smoothness (a plate or hot-press finish prevents fibre drag that blurs fine lines), sizing (controls ink spread — well-sized paper keeps lines sharp), and weight (heavier paper stays flatter under ink saturation and doesn't buckle).
Smooth is necessary but not sufficient. Some smooth papers have poor sizing and let ink wick laterally, blurring 0.1–0.2 mm lines. Look for 'plate' or 'hot press' finishing and check user reviews for fineliner performance specifically.
Below 0.3 mm it matters significantly. A 0.1 mm line on a rough surface will feather; on plate bristol it stays as a hairline. At 0.5 mm and above, most smooth papers perform well. If you're plotting very fine detail or stippling, invest in quality paper — the difference is visible.
